Youth Campaign Against the Siege in Yemen
Press release from our member in Yemen, Youth Without Borders Organisation for Development
The ‘Youth Campaign Against the Siege’ closely follows the siege imposed on Taiz for almost five years and the close of Sana’a International Airport for three years. Such a protracted siege has resulted in a negative impact and doubled the suffering of civilians with no real action undertaken to put an end to such a humanitarian crisis. This has led us to come forward and extend the humanitarian voice to all decision-makers to reconsider this case and urge them to take immediate actions.
This Youth Campaign is formed of a group of youth based in Taiz, who have passed through the most difficult circumstances as a result of the siege. It has only a humanitarian objective away from any political affiliation or any other kind of interests. Accordingly, we launch this campaign to advocate for ending the siege on Taiz and Sana’a Airport through engaging social, humanitarian, media, and human rights activists to be part of this campaign.
We, Youth Campaign Against the Siege, call all the social, humanitarian, media and human rights activists to actively participate in the campaign of ‘Enough-Siege’, with an aim to end what is causing travel safety risks, extra costs, rise and shortage of essential substances, mobility difficulties among the elderly, and the tragic death of many. The Campaign calls on everyone to take action from a humanitarian point of view, with no political exploitation to maintain its actual humanitarian objective of advocating for the human rights of people in both Taiz and Sana’a. Enough-Siege calls on local, national and international actors to consider this humanitarian case, kindly requesting:
- The conflict actors to consider the religious legislation and international human rights laws, particularly those related to the freedom of travel and movement of civilians;
- The UN’s Special Envoy to Yemen to play his role in converging the views of the conflict actors in a way that ends the siege and reduces Yemenis’ suffering;
- The Sana’a authorities are requested to end the siege imposed on Taiz by its forces there;
- The Arab Coalition to end the siege on Sana’a Airport as it was before 9 August 2016;
- Other actors to release statements condemning the siege and call to end the siege on Taiz and Sana’a Airport.
