UNOY Peacebuilders Call for the Protection of Citizens from Gang Violence in Haiti
Haiti has faced a long history of violence due to the presence of gangs. Unfortunately, a young peacebuilder from our network is one of the victims of the most recent episode of violence.
On 5 May, an armed group took control of the neighbourhood around Avenue Bolosse in the capital Port-au-Prince, ordering all residents to leave their homes within three days. All families were left with no solution but to run away while houses were burned and looted. The former leader of the neighbourhood has been shot. Over 100 families fled, many of which are without shelter and still at major risk—including our member.
This young peacebuilder and her family are in a precarious situation, living in their car. Haiti is currently experiencing the rainy season as well as the COVID-19 crisis, making the situation even more challenging. At the moment there has not been a government response.
UNOY Peacebuilders stands in solidarity with the victims of this conflict and calls the international community to join us. In addition, we call:
- on local and national governments to respond to this violence and protect the human rights of all citizens;
- for regional, national, and local organisations to secure shelter and relocation options to the fleeing population, especially during the rain season;
- regional intergovernmental bodies present in the region or country to support Haiti in complying with rule of law and international human rights commitments;
- the peace and security community to support local actors in their efforts to provide victims with humanitarian assistance, including shelter and psychosocial support, and to amplify this message.
Our global community of young peacebuilders stands in solidarity with those affected by such senseless violence and we demand accountability.
